“A lump of coal-taking up space,” is how a fourth-grade nun describes ten-year-old William Chamberlain. Despite his struggle with dyslexia, a precocious and rebellious spirit and labeled dumb, William vows to have money one day; he won’t be poor like his parents.
As he grows into adulthood, nothing, not his lack of education, The Great Depression, World War II, or a bad marriage can deter him from seeking his dream.
William possesses the innocence, naivety, and warmness of heart of a Forest Gump.
This story of William and his family spans nearly three decades.

It's 1927, and all we know about SMALL TOWN (book by Gloria Sarasin) is that it is in the Midwest. That's all we need to know because the town's founder insisted: "State and town don't matter none -- only serves to divide." But we do get to intimately know young William (Will) Chamberlain from the age of ten throughout much of his life. Will is one of--ultimately--twelve children, and he is the one who is dyslexic, a term unknown during his childhood. As a result, his teacher tells him he is "a lump of coal--taking up space." Even his parents finally give up on his formal education when he is in seventh grade, and Will takes on adult responsibilities far too soon. But Will intends to have money one day, and never be as poor as his family. You will enjoy growing up with Will Chamberlain. (Men readers would like this too.) Life continually throws him curve balls, but he never gives up, even when he fights in World War II. I liked this novel a lot, mostly because I learned so much about how the really poor but honest people survived during the Depression, and the faith of Will's godly mother. It's a fine read.

Small Town edition by Gloria Sarasin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Such a good book, scans the ages of the children. Although not a true story, it could be. Wonderful story, good read.
If you like history, this is a good book to read.
Highly enjoyed.
This story is so well written. One of those you can't put down. It's a story of the hardships of one family and especially the hardships of their dyslexic son Will. Loved it!!
This story follows Williams life from age 10 in the Depression era through adulthood. Very good description of life during the depression. There is humor and no vulgar language. No typos. I would recommend.
The author has captured the essence of living in a small town. I had a hard time putting this book down. It had adventure, love and good old fashioned family values. I recommend this book. The ending was just perfect!
It took me a while to get into the book and what exactly it was about, but once I did, I greatly enjoyed reading it. Good read about growing up poor before/during/after the Great Depression
Thought this novel was great and held my interest from cover to cover. Spans quite a bit of a little boy's life with his very large family. He had it rough as a child due to his learning disabilities but throughout the book one could see he really was a good child. I found myself rooting for him and hoped he would receive the love he deserved.
A very depressing family saga. The main character in this story is William. Today it would be recognized that he was "learning challenged' with dyslexia. He came from a very large family (when it was all over, he had 11 siblings. And yes, they were dirt poor. Don't even try to keep the names straight. William had to learn to survive an abusive father. Yes, he needed discipline, but not being beaten with a razor strap. Too much detail on the beatings..Also the author went into too much detail (more than once) when she described the aftermath of when William ate beans. We all know what happens. The author went into detail when she told of what happened to William when he had a steady diet of beans. That was what his Mother packed for him to eat when he went to the family cabin for 5 days. Ewwww! That was all he had to eat for 5 days-----BEANS. Too much detail. (Yes, it was later learned that he had IBS). An interesting family saga.
