Lourdes Robert Hugh Benson Books Reviews

A good and easy read, very enjoyable and descriptive.
Old but true as well as pious and holy. I do believe in miracles! Written by a religious and holy man.
This book gives a good account of Lourdes and faith written when the events were investigated by doctors and the church.
The author tells us his reaction from his visit to Lourdes. He was rather skeptical at the start, but a firm believer in modern day miracles by the end of his visit.
I bought this for free via . It is an interesting account of the medical miracles at Lourdes France where the Blessed Virgin mary appeared to a shepard girl in 1858. The author, a medical doctor visted Lourdes in 1908 and discusses many of the medical miracles that occurred there since the visitations of 1858. What stood out for me was the unshakeable faith of those who went forward to bathe in the waters of Lourdes hoping for physical and spiritual healing...
Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson's reflections on his 3-day trip to Lourdes give the reader an insider's view, inasmuch as you are treated to both the spiritual and scientific understanding of what he saw take place during his pilgrimage to Lourdes. This is a quick and easy read, under 3 hours for most readers. There is some untranslated French, most of it prayers, but nothing that can't be figured out with a few clicks of the mouse. This piece is well worth the short time it takes to read.
A surprisingly good book by Rev. Robert Hugh Benson. Surprising because it is written in the early 1900's, at a time when many clerics wrote in a pompous, antiquated manor. This guy indeed showed himself as a bit arrogant when he entered Lourdes, the scene of Our Lady's apparation to Bernadette. But he left truly changed.

Father Benson had been an Anglican clergyman who had converted. (Folks at Lourdes kept asking him his reasons.) Benson went to Lourdes for answers and an article. As he entered the town, he looked at the unruly crowds, the cheap electric lights, the less-than-inspiring churches. It was as if he was looking down his nose at the provincial town and its unwashed humanity. It is surprising that he left us this unappetizing picture of himself, since he grew so much within a few days of his arrival.

Benson spent much of his time in the piscines, where those claiming miracles went for examination. What? Yep, at Lourdes just saying you're healed doesn't make it so. Certificates are required before and after the healing and there's and usually a year's waiting period. They will not claim a miracle unless one is proved -- as many, many are.

He said Mass every day, and then watched the procession each evening. This is where the Holy Eucharist (Jesus in body, soul, blood and divinity) is carried past the seriously ill. He was humbled by the fact that some were outwardly healed, but many more were healed in their souls. He said of the Virgin Mary's part in this as the same as in all of her life (continued in Heaven) she brings Jesus to the people and He chooses whom to heal. The same at Bethlehem and Cana.

It's well-written, surprisingly modern and a quick read. Read it as a Christian, whatever your denomination. Read it as a record of Jesus the Healer of bodies and souls.
Extremely interesting account of an Anglican turned Catholic priest about his trip to Lourdes in 1908. This was during the Jubilee Year of the 1858 apparitions, when miracles still seemed to happen almost everyday. I have been to Lourdes a few times, and although one could find piety, faith, and devotion, I cannot recall the mass passion, fervor, and even hysteria that he describes. The reason I took a star off was because the Aeterna Press edition does not have Benson's footnotes or the original photographs. The so-called illustrations are of the totally unrelated Rouen Cathedral (Monet). The mobi edition on Gutenberg.org is FREE and complete.
